The Wild O Podcast or I Am Interviewed

I had too much fun talking with Dagni Rose of The Wild O Podcast a while back. No, really, I had too much fun. We talked for hours, that's right, hours and she had to edit all my drivel down to about 30 minutes of scintillating literary discussion. And fun: did I mention fun? I've decided I laugh far too much. I really need to rein it in.

However, she was up to the task, even after her software crashed and she had to find something new and better to allow her to do the hours and hours of editing. So, while you may be interested in hearing what D. L. King actually sounds like, you actually owe it to Dagni Rose to listen to the interview that took days, possibly even years off her life to produce!

I talk about Carnal Machines and my other anthologies, as well as the fabulous authors in those books. I also manage to mention my novels and short stories. So, check it out, if you're so inclined. Let me know what you think.

The Carter/Johnson Leather Library

I was surprised and thrilled when I was asked to read in the Carter/Johnson Leather Library when I was at Leather Pride Night this year. I mentioned to Vi Johnson that I was going to be at TES Fest for the book signing and she asked me if I could stop by and do a reading in the library.

For those of you who don’t know, the Carter/Johnson Leather Library travels around the country to various leather and fetish events. Their motto is: Never again landfill. Never again flames. Their mission is to protect, archive and share the history of media depicting the history and heritage of leather, fetish and S/M erotica. It’s an amazing archive and growing all the time.

On Saturday, July 2, I drove out to New Jersey to TES’s 40^th anniversary TES Fest for the book signing and to read in the library. The signing went really well and I sold and signed more books then ever before at TES Fest. Other authors at the signing were Laura Antoniou, Susan Wright, Cassandra Park and Kasi Alexander.

A woman whom I’d previously met at the NELA Fetish Fair Flea stopped by, just as everyone started packing up, to buy a book I’d sold out of at NELA. She was nice enough to help me pack everything and then even help me bring everything over to the library, since I was about to be late! (Thanks Aurora!)

When I got to the library, they were setting up cameras to record my reading, how cool! Vi came in and said she wanted to interview me first because she had lots of questions to which she needed answers. I had no idea I’d be interviewed first and was completely humbled that she would be interested in hearing anything other than bits and pieces of my fiction. We had a great conversation and then I read “The Uninitiated Bottom,” from Power Play (Xcite, August 2011). It was the first time reading the story in public and I very happy to say it went over really well. (Vi needed to take a break.) Then I read a chapter from The Marrying Kind, which everyone liked. At some point, all the footage will be edited and put on the library’s website. You can’t believe how excited I am about that and I can’t wait to see it. (Sure hope I don’t look like an idiot!)

I gave Vi a signed copy of each of the books I’ve edited, as well as each of my novels. She totally blew me away when she told me that Where the Girls Are: Urban Lesbian Erotica was the most requested title. I’m totally in awe of all the authors in the anthology. And for those of you who aren’t in the book, or haven’t read it, you should pick it up.

Lobster Roll Rumble

Luke's Lobster

I asked my best friend if he’d like to go to the Lobster Roll Rumble as his birthday gift. I was pretty sure I knew the answer. You see, we’re both big fans of lobster rolls, well, of a particular lobster roll, to be exact.

What’s a Lobster Roll Rumble, you ask? It’s a contest to see who makes the best lobster roll. This year’s rumble was the second, I think. At any rate, the first time I heard about it was last year and by the time I saw it advertised, it was already sold out. This year, the day the tickets went on sale I texted my friend and asked if he wanted to go. We got tickets a month, or so, in advance (yay!) and the event sold out a few days later.

So, what do you do at a lobster roll rumble? Well, you eat lobster rolls. Now, let me be the first to tell you, I LOVE lobster. As far as I’ve been concerned, there can’t be too much lobster. I can easily eat two Main lobsters for dinner—and look for more. So, as you might expect, I was psyched!

There were 18 chefs in contention for the prize, which was to be decided by a celebrity panel of judges: Donatella Arpaia, Harold Dieterle and Katie Lee. But the crowd would award the Fan Favorite award. Last year, our favorite lobster roll maker won: Lukes Lobster, here in New York City. I couldn’t imagine anyone beating Luke for best lobster roll. All you have to do is taste it and you’ll know why I say that… But more about that later. Who were the contenders? A lot of them came from New York but several were from out of town.—places like Boston, Chicago, Maine, San Francisco, Los Angeles (I was really interested to see what an Angelino knew about the ultimate New England treat.).

So we got there, in the pouring rain, and once they let us in, we made our way to one of the chefs’ tables somewhere in the middle, to beat the rush at the beginning. Now, I’ve been to wine tastings before. You take a sip—and if you’re really serious, you spit it out—you don’t drink the whole glass. So, we each get a lobster roll (and let me tell you, they were the size of a half-roll, not a mere bite) and my friend eats the whole thing. Not to be outdone, I do the same. It was okay (Jaded New Yorker, here: how is lobster ever merely okay?) but nothing to write home about. We moved on to the next table and did it again. I have to say, I was quite impressed, as was my friend, by the second roll. It was made by B&G Oysters from Boston. Well, figures, Bostonians should know how to make a lobster roll. It was damn fine, but it wasn’t Lukes. I’m just sayin’…

It was at this point that my sense of self preservation kicked in. I only ate about half of the third roll. And from then on, I took a couple of bites, maybe three at the most, occasionally just one, before deciding whether it would get my vote. I took a break after the fourth table for a Main Root Sarsaparilla, then another break after the sixth table for a glass of wine. You gotta pace yourself.

I’d heard a lot about Red Hook Lobster Pound, from Brooklyn, and gave them a try. I liked them (not as much a Lukes) but I think I was allergic to something in their roll as shortly after I had my three bites I began to itch like crazy. I took a water break and waited for the itching to subside. It did.

By this time I was pretty done in. I think I made it through 11 different lobster rolls before I just couldn’t eat any more. My friend was still able to take a taste and I had him tell me if any that he tasted, after I whimped out, were worth my forcing myself. None were. I’m not sure how many he had, but he didn’t get through all 18 either.

We cast our votes for Lukes, amid a flurry of other voters doing the same and I actually got to meet Luke! Very nice guy. I told him my location of choice was the original Lower East Side place.

I took a sparkling wine break.

My friend actually wanted to taste the desserts. I told him I was happy to drink and watch him taste desserts. Seriously? I had no idea how he was doing that! Yes, I can eat a ridiculous amount of lobster, but even I can’t eat it forever. I found my limit in lobster.

I saw him the next night at another party and asked him how he was. He said he wasn’t really hungry. I told him I woke up wanting a Lukes Lobster roll. I think he said something about waking up, wanting to die... nah! He loved his birthday present.

Did Luke’s win? He did win the Fan Favorite Award. The celebrity judges awarded Mary’s Fish Camp their award. Too much mayo, if you ask me.

Had Luke’s not been competing, I would have given my voting chit to B&G. Next time I’m in Boston, I’ll have to go there…

Hi, all. I'm Elias, and I wrote Infernal Machine. I'm a former English teacher, and I live in Central Florida with my other half, our son, and a cat.

At least, that's what it says here.

Really, everything about that is true... except for the name. Well, I suppose the name is true, too. It's just not the one I usually go by. Yep. Elias A. St. James is a pen name. You all are clever people, if you dig, you'll find who I really am. If you care, that is. I can't imagine why you would. But I'm lousy at keeping secrets, so the information is out there.

I had a lot of fun writing Infernal Machine, because it is one of the few stories I've written that involved a visual aid. This one, in fact.

Carnal Machines Blog Tour Kicks Off

Carnal Machines is out and available and I’m kicking off a blog tour with the authors. But before I get to the particulars of the tour, I thought I’d talk just a little bit about corsets—me and corsets.

I love corsets; I own three of them. I think the fascination began in my years doing Renaissance festivals. Those were called bodices, though, not corsets. Although they laced up tightly, giving me a smaller waist, accentuating my hips and making my practically non-existent breasts mound just a bit, giving me the appearance of cleavage. Ah, but it did feel good to unlace at the end of a long, sweaty day.

Now, I own three steel-boned corsets. Yes, there will be no pictures. (I’m not tiny anymore.) Now, they help to cinch in my non-existent waist but don’t do all that much for my still non-existent tits. But they do still make me feel totally sexy. The first one I bought was an electric blue silk which was very elegant but somehow ended up being too large. I traded it in for a smaller one but they didn’t have the same fabric so I ended up with a black and blue striped silk that was rather nice. It’s too small, now.

I’ve always had a thing for leather and so my next corset was an over-the-bust, again black and blue, leather corset. (Those colors have such lovely connotations and I still get nice and sweaty when wielding a heavy flogger.) It’s lovely and I fell in love with the makers, S M Hertz because they actually took the bust in the following year, for free--on a leather corset! (Yes, I really do have non-existent tits. I’m just saying…) In fact, I love them so much, I bought another corset from them, this time something that reminded me more of steampunk. It too is leather, black and white, this time. With a long black skirt and a very cool steampunk jacket, it works perfectly for Carnal Machines.

Now, to do a Carnal Machines reading so I can wear the outfit!

I have a story in the anthology. It’s called “The Treatment.” Knowing me, I’m sure you can just imagine what that might be about… I think I’ll leave it to your imagination until you go out and get a copy of the book for yourself. But let me share the introduction with you:

The Victorians wrote some of the best and most enduring erotica. For such a tightly laced age, people spent a lot of time thinking about things carnal. And, speaking of tightly-laced, I love the feel of being laced into a tight corset; the constriction; the way the fabric encases my body and hugs my curves. It makes me feel powerful. But that’s a tale, perhaps best left for another time.

Jules Verne, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, H.G. Wells, et al enthralled us with their visions of new possibilities during the steam age. They, of course, didn’t coin the phrase, steampunk. No, that was our generation’s answer to the pressures of the technological age (that’s the age after the space age—there are lots of ages). We find it somehow comforting to go back to a simpler time but, because we can’t do without our technical marvels, we recreate them as they might have been made in the steam age. Steampunk.

But what was that about corsets? Oh, yes, corsets, tightly-laced carnality. Steampunk, even without sex, is erotic; with sex, it’s over-the-top hot. Just think of all the deliciously erotic machines that could be run on steam power or a rudimentary form of electricity. The authors of this anthology thought of little else, or so it would seem.

A widowed lady engineer invents a small device that can store the energy from sexual frustration and convert it to electricity to help power a home. Teresa Noelle Roberts shows us what it can do, confronted with sexual fulfillment.

What volume of steampunk would be complete without a tale of sailing ships and the men who sail them? Poe Von Page introduces us to the mutinous crew of the Danika Blue and their new captain. Of course this ship sails the solar winds of space, rather than the sea and the captain has quite the interesting relationship with the ship’s redheaded cartographer, with her delicate features, ecru eyes, black lace dress and charcoal-smudged fingers.

Then there’s the very special room on the top floor in the House of the Sable Locks, a brothel where sexually discriminating men go to have their fantasies fulfilled. Even if a man daren’t put those fantasies into words, Elizabeth Schechter’s “Succubus” will give the madam all the information she needs with which to make her clients happy.

D.L. - Thank you so much for having us on your fabulous blog! We've been engaged in an ongoing conversation lately about the nature of our industry -- smart smut -- and it's an honor to get to talk with an industry icon like you. It’s always a boost to the morale.

Our second anthology, Nice Girls, Naughty Sex, was just released. We're so excited about our newest baby, and we like to talk about it whenever we can. After all it’s packed to the brim with some of the top talent in our industry and full of salacious and sexy tales for all.

However, we've recently noticed that opening our big provocative mouths sometimes gets us slapped, and not in a fun way.

For example, Samantha was recently meeting with some legal professionals for advice. When asked what she did for a living, she cheerily replied that she writes and edits erotica and sex advice. After a short, awkward pause, voices became strained and lips pursed. One woman refused to look Sam in the eye from then on out. Needless to say, the meeting was cut short and Samantha drove home feeling both sad and indignant.

Conversely, Jordan had a great experience (which she shared in April's editor's letter) at a dinner party with what appeared to be a very conservative guest list. Although she had planned on keeping conversation steered away from her (ahem) more colorful career choices, she ended up passionately confessing she edits erotica and writes sex advice. Part of her was sure she would be booted from the party, but instead, she was embraced and became the focal point of the conversation. With her confession, the table turned from polite and formal to animated and a bit raucous; more wine was poured and smiles glowed bigger.

After we exchanged stories, we ruminated on the nature of our biz, and how many times we've encountered prejudice and (on the flip side) been surprisingly embraced. When we first started out, the Small Business Association in Boulder, Colorado wouldn't help us with our business plan because our business was "adult". And Tattered Cover, a huge independent book store in Denver (with an entire section dedicated to erotica) wouldn't host an author reading for our first book when it came out. But on the flip side, the most conservative-seeming people out there, from Mormon housewives to Midwest soccer moms have touted their undying love of erotica and all that we publish, and our own lovely independent book store in Boulder, The Boulder Book Store, actually reaches out to us and invites us to schedule signings, even before our books get off the printers.

The long and short of it is, it's hard to anticipate how we'll be received. The people we think will poo-poo us usually surprise us, and when we feel safe and confident that we're in the company of allies, ugly small judgments rear their ugly, misshapen heads.

Like it or hate it, we do feel that our presence and what we all do by writing and publishing erotica and putting ourselves out there in the world (or on the web) gives everyone else more permission to talk about sex and be more sexual, however they choose to do that. In personal circles, we notice that when we bring up what we do, it unlocks conversation that otherwise never happens. A woman hears that we edit erotica, and she then feels free to share an amazing night she recently had with a lover. A couple finds out we write sex advice, and they dish on their favorite positions. That's truly something to be proud of, no matter how many awkward pauses and disapproving looks we get.

We want to give a big thanks to all the talented men and women out there who put on their hard hats (and condoms) and descend into the coal mines of erotic writing. And an even bigger thanks to all the people who enjoy and support the smart smut, your encouragement is what keeps us going!

I look forward to seeing her again this May at the Saints & Sinners writers conference in New Orleans! But now, without further ado, lets get to the good part...

Hi Fiona!

Diane, thanks for welcoming me on your blog to talk about my new book, Dangerous Pleasures. I feel sexier already just being here in the digital flesh. Let’s jump right in. What questions do you have for me?

Since you came out with your first book, Bliss, in 2005 you’ve been writing one book every year. I noticed you slowed down with this latest book. Why did it take you two years to come out with Dangerous Pleasures?

Well, around the time I was supposed to be finishing up the book in 2008 and getting the book ready for a 2009 release, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was physically and creatively wiped out by the experience and it took me a while to bounce back. But here I am!

Are you satisfied with how the novel turned out?
Yes, very satisfied. Already the reviews coming in have been positive with a particularly good one from Publishers Weekly that came out in December. I’m looking forward to hearing what my readers have to say.

Do you often hear from your readers? What kinds of things do they say?
I do. For me it’s one of the most rewarding parts of being a writer. I’ve had readers contact me to voice their objections to my use of certain words—one woman hated my use of “cunt” and we had a lively and respectful discussion about that. Some readers tell me what they like, of course, and also what they’d like to see more of. As far as I’m concerned, paying attention to what my readers have to say only makes me a better writer.

Do you write under a pseudonym as a writer of erotic romance? Why? Or why not?
Yes, I do. When I published my first book, I wasn’t thinking about a pseudonym as a way to hide who I was but rather as the way I chose to present myself to the world. Since I practically tripped into the genre—I thought I was just writing romance—I’m known as “Fiona Zedde” when I write erotic literature and by my real name when I write my young adult and other less sexually charged books.

And the last question, but by no means the least important: Sex or Food?
Can’t I have both at the same time?

Anyway, sometimes the spirit moves me and the spirit definitely moved me when I watched this book trailer. This is really the coolest book trailer I've seen and I thought I'd share it with you, my (3) faithful readers. A Toy Review

So, the nice people at TheirToys.com asked me if I might like to experience their toys firsthand and then blog about my findings. Who am I to turn down such a generous offer? I LOVE toys, especially adult toys! I’ve loved toys since I was a very small child—just not the same kind of toys…

They asked me what type of toy I might like and after hours and hours of thought, (yeah, right…) I decided on anal toys and specifically the High Intensity Vibro Tease Vibrating Anal Plug.

Actually, I’d been perusing the butt plugs on their site for a while and lusting after that particular toy. I was really excited that they agreed to give it to me.

I’m a fan of anal plugs and have quite a collection of them (go figure…). Some are for me and some are for my boy. This one is definitely for me! (My boy’s tender bottom would really enjoy it but, I’m not sharing.) It’s made of a beautiful transparent-blue jelly-like material. It’s soft, but not too soft and shiny-slick and it comes with it’s own waterproof vibrating bullet. One of the best things about the bullet is that it takes one triple-A battery, instead of the usual hearing aid cylinders that die so quickly—if you know what I mean. This one goes on and on and on, pretty much as long as you want it to. I gave it a good long test, you know, just to be sure it would last, you know, in case someone wanted it use it continuously for, say—a while…

Trust me, it lasts, and the vibrations don’t decrease in power.

The Vibro Tease is aptly named; it is a tease. Even first timers would be able to use it with no problem. It’s not very big around and it’s so smooth and slick, that once lubed up, it just slides right in. Press the soft touch button on the end of the bullet and a very quiet, very sweet vibration is delivered to just the right spot.

Sometimes you want something that’s small and gentle. You don’t have to be a size queen ALL the time! Like I said, it’s a tease. But if you’re looking for a large or powerful toy, this isn’t it. It’s cool for DP, too. How do I know, you ask? A lady never tells.

My only complaint is that while the toy has a very large base, it doesn’t have a narrow neck, so it slips out easily. It’s not a toy you can insert and then walk around with. I had to use my bed as a backstop to keep it where I wanted it, but that wasn’t such a bad thing. Hey, next time, maybe I’ll get comfortable and read one of my books. Actually, yeah… that’s a great idea!

Passion Reading at Word in Brooklyn

Last Thursday, my friend Donna George Storey was in town from the West Coast. She'd come to read her story in Rachel Kramer Bussel's new erotic romance anthology, Passion. We made plans to meet up in the city, earlier that day.

Emerald, another friend and author (Actually, I'd only met Emerald on one previous occasion, almost two years ago at Rachel's In the Flesh, and hadn't had the chance to get to know her. But now, we really are friends!) was in town to read also. Robin, another friend, had come in from Connecticut to support Donna and Emerald.

They spent the day at the Museum of Sex and I joined them later in the afternoon at Donna's sister's in Manhattan for wine and cheese before heading out to the reading, back in Brooklyn.

Although it was Veteran's day, there was a lot more rush hour traffic than I'd anticipated and our cab had a hell of a time trying to get over the Williamsburg Bridge, but we finally made it to Word, only a few minutes late. And as anyone who has attended a reading knows, it didn't start on time, anyway. So we were there in plenty of time!

There were a few other readers there, including Rachel and the reading went very well. Passion promises to be a real hit and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Donna and Emerald, as well as the other readers.

It happened to be Rachel's birthday (well, actually, her birthday was a few days earlier...) and I got to tag along with Donna and Emerald to her birthday dinner at Anella, a really lovely restaurant in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. This bread was wonderful! It's their signature item and is baked in a flower pot. Unfortunately, the restaurant is way too dark for my taste and isn't at all conducive to photography, so this is the best I could do. (If you click on the restaurant link, you'll get a much better picture.)

The food was really excellent, as was the waiter, unfortunately, the server was a bit over-zealous for my taste. The space is very small, but the food is well worth any discomfort. I do wish they'd turn up the light a bit, though. Personally, I like being able to read the menu and see my food, especially when it's so well prepared and plated.

It was great to see Donna again. She doesn't make it to New York nearly often enough for my taste and it was great getting to know Emerald better!

I called for three separate cars to get people back to Manhattan from the restaurant (So many Manhattanites are so lost in Brooklyn...). Of course one of them was for me because, even though I live in Brooklyn, I don't live anywhere near the restaurant and none of the subway lines in the area would get me home remotely easily... All I can say is Arecibo, my go-to car service, rocks!

Spank! Blog Tour Kicks Off

On Septmeber 15^th, my new anthology, Spank! will be released by Logical Lust Publications and today kicks off a twenty-one-day-long blog tour. (A little later in the post, I’ll publish the schedule, with addresses.)

I’ve told people to write about whatever they want, so I’ve no idea what they’ll talk about. It should be interesting to follow along. I’m pretty sure there’ll be a few excerpts posted. Maybe some pictures, too.

But what are you going to get from me? Well, I’m winging it so, here goes nothin’:

Most people know me as a domme or a top. That means I spank—I don’t get spanked—usually. Last month I attended a really cool BDSM convention called Floating World. I went to several workshops and learned some nifty, new things. I spent a few hours enthralled by one of my absolute idols. I chatted with the likes of Cecilia Tan and Laura Antoniou. I bought a new corset—one that is just a little steampunk—for later. I played in the humongous dungeon (man, they had some furniture I’ve been lusting after for years…) and then…

And then… I allowed myself to be flogged (because it’s a great form of massage and I really needed a massage) and then—wait for it—caned. It’s not something I usually allow, but sometimes it’s exactly what’s needed.

I’m not into pain; I’m not into being spanked, but I am into sensation. And let me tell you, that light caning felt wonderful. It was exactly what I needed to relax away all my tension and stress. It wasn’t the kind of caning that leaves bruises, not like the one I’d given earlier in the night; it was the kind of caning that got me ready for a really good night’s sleep. What can I say?

Richard’s Reward

Richard made her wet; there was no getting around that. The act of spanking him, first with her hand and then with leather, could become a religious experience. The scent of his arousal, the sight of his marks, and the feel when she ran her fingers lightly over them, could almost cause her to climax, at times.

She brought the strap down again, just above the first stroke, and he bounced against the bed and grunted. Quickly she gave him a third just below the original stroke. This time he cried out.

Suzanne gazed at the three perfect red stripes on his rosy bottom and ran her fingertips over them lightly. She heard him wince.

“Please, please, please,” he moaned.

“Open your legs for me,” she said. She reached between them and fondled and massaged his balls until he groaned and sighed. “Just three more now. Are you ready?”

“Please, please, please,” he whispered.

“Please what, Richard? I’m waiting. You need to tell me to finish your spanking.”

“Please…”

“Yes?”

“Please, Suzanne, please finish my spanking,” he groaned.

“All right then, if that’s what you want… Close your legs for me now; we wouldn’t want any accidents.”

Suzanne quickly finished up with a vertical stroke on each side and a final stroke across his sweet spot. The last stoke wrenched a scream from him and he was actively crying when she put the strap down and gathered him into her arms. He came willingly and buried his face against her neck.

Suzanne sat next to him on the side of the bed, gently rocking and holding him close. Although shaking with sobs, she could tell he was much calmer than when he had arrived. A good spanking tended to relax him and relieve his stress. This particular spanking would, hopefully, keep him stress-free for most of the coming week.

She handed him a box of tissues and waited until he regained his composure.

I'll be participating in a panel discussion on spanking, along with Ms Cassandra Park , at the TES Sapnking Group. The group will meet at Paddles on Saturday, July 17, 2010.

Both Cassandra and I will be talking about, and reading from, our new books. Her's titled, It’s SUPPOSED to Hurt! and mine, the upcoming Spank! from Logical Lust. We will also have books on hand to sell and sign. (Spank! will not be available until next month, but I will have copies of the Melinoe books, as well as my other anthologies.

The meeting is at Paddles, 250 West 26th Street, NYC, Basement, between 7th and 8th Avenues

My Contribution to Being Naked

A while back, Donna George Storey, Shanna Germain and Neve Black started quite an amazing and singular blog called F-Stop: Expose The Naked I. It's a place where artists get naked. Well, not necessarily, but yes, naked.

Here's the first bit about what they were looking for:

This blog will feature all genres of erotic art with the focus on exposing the most vulnerable parts of each contributing creator. We’re looking for you to expose those exquisite soft and pink parts that lay hidden somewhere inside and are usually kept safely locked up. You can find it here.

When I first heard about it I thought I might like to contribute a piece. Then I though, no, who am I to be a part of something so obviously, for wont of a better word, literary. But then Donna asked me--and I said I would--and then I didn't. I figured she'd forget about me, but she didn't. Periodically, she'd remind me about the blog. And then she said, if I didn't want to use a naked picture of me, she had one of my toy cabinet. She thought it symbolized me pretty well.

It wasn't the naked picture, so much as my figuring I didn't have anything important to say and who would be interested in hearing about me anyway. But when she suggested I use the picture she'd taken when she visited back in 2008 (here's her blog post), I thought, OK, I can do that. Then I figured I needed a naked picture of me to go along with it.

I'm really pleased by the way it turned out. It was just posted tonight, May 1, 2010. Go and take a look. And while you're there, check out the other posts. There are some extraordinary people there, exposing themselves for you. If you stop by, leave a comment. I'd be interested in your thoughts.

According to Wikipedia, “Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction and speculative fiction, frequently featuring elements of fantasy … The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used — usually the 19th century, and often Victorian era England — but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy…” (Please see the Wikipedia entry, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk for much more on the subject.)

But, in the mean time, think about what sort of fantastical inventions Jules Verne and H. G. Wells might have come up with if they were wholly consumed with thoughts of carnal pleasure—if they were like you—and wrote erotica. Transport yourself to an era, or alternate world, where corsets and lace-up ankle boots are in fashion, where clockwork toys are made for discerning adults and it’s easy to fall down rabbit holes into other worlds. But remember the standard caveat: no underage, no incest, no animals and no violence for the sake of violence. As always, I’m relying on you to make me wet!

This anthology is primarily heterosexual, but I’ll happily consider GLBT stories. Stories should be between 1,500 and 4,500 words, double-spaced, 12 pt Times New Roman or Courier New. Please indent the first line of each paragraph one-half inch and do not include extra lines between paragraphs. Story a little too long or too short? Query me. You may submit up to two stories.

Send your story as a .doc or .rtf attachment and include the title, pseudonym (if applicable) and your legal name and mailing address to steamantho@gmail.com. Yes, it's that time of year again. The time when the thoughts of the kink literati of New York--and the world--turn to all things cinematically kinky. Well, you know what I mean. It's the CineKink F ilm Festival!

2010 marks year seven of the annual festival and I think I've gone to at least parts of most of them. T

he festival kicked off Wednesday with a film by Erik Lamens (Belgium) and like a truly fine, dark, bittersweet chocolate, his film, SM Rechter (S & M Judge) slowly melted and lingered in the minds of film goers.

Based on a true story in Belgium, the film blew me away. Beautifully shot, scored and acted, the film is the story of a judge who saves his marriage by giving his wife what she needs. After months of deep depression and, finally, a nervous breakdown, his wife tells him about her deep-seated fantasy to be dominated.

I don't want to tell you what happens because I hope you'll be able to see the film eventually. This is a film that should be widely distributed, but most-likely will not be. If, however, you can get your hands on a dvd, please see it. I was awed and moved to tears by this love story.

The Holiday That Was

I promised more New York holiday pictures and it's still Three Kings Day for another 10 minutes, so I guess I can still put a few up.

Now, let's start out with a trip to Lord and Taylor's windows. Here's one that is near and dear to my heart. If you follow me and have read any of my older bios, you know all about my thoughts on roasted chestnuts. This window depicts a roast chestnut vendor or yesteryear. By the way, I actually did see a guy selling roast chestnuts on the street by Rockafeller Center! But I didn't buy any.

I loved this one. It's a giant snow globe encompassing the city and a family doing their holiday shopping. Very clever.I wish the snow had been swirling inside.

Moving on, Saks' decorations were really wonderful. Giant, lighted snow flakes on the side of the building. So what? you say. It was all about the carillon and the light show that went with the music. I'd read about it in Time Out New York and they said it sounded cheesey but wasn't a bit. They were right. It was magical. Crossing the street and standing at the entrance to the tree at Rock Center, you could turn around and watch the snow flakes dance and snow and it was lovely to see a whole crowd of New Yorkers gazing up at the building with their mouths open and big smiles on their faces. I was one of them.

My Dulcet Tones

He has this wonderful website called Dr. Dick's Sex Advice or Sex Advice With An Edge and he pod casts. You've got to check out some of the people he's interviewed--oh, my god--and then there's me! I was interviewed as part of "The Erotic Mind" series. I'm humbled to be in such company.

The interview is in two parts. The first part aired on 1/3/10 and can be found here. The second part will air next week. Watch for it on or around 1/10/10. I had an awful lot of fun, as I'm sure you can tell when you listen, and I think I'm in love with Dr. Dick.

I wanted to post these pictures of the holiday decorations at the Time Warner Center in Columbus Circle. The stars slowly change color. It's

But what holiday shopping day would be

complete without the requisite Santa Convention on the street? And I don't really know who the ice princess/queen is, but I guess she keeps the Santas entertained.

Now, I did take these pictures before Christmas, it's just due to laziness that I haven't gotten around to posting them until now.

I attended one of my favorite annual events shortly after this shopping spree--PN's holiday

party. It happened to be the day of the first great snow storm of the season and so, after lots of great food, a bloody mary, some wine, a glass of Port and several shots of Rumplemintz, to toast the holiday, I headed home through the snow. Here's a picture of my street (see, I had enough wherewithal and presence of mind to take a few pictures...).

Here's my door.

I managed to make it inside and had a pleasant night's sleep, even if I was a bit toasted the next day. Figuring I'd have to shovel my way out when I woke up, I was extremely happy to find my landlord had come in and done the work for me!

Tomorrow I'm going to see The Tree and a few 5th Avenue window displays before everything comes down after the New Year's celebration. If my iPhone doesn't freeze, I'll post more pics!

A Book Trailer Worth Your Time

I just watched this trailer for the new anthology, Peep Show, from Rachel Kramer Bussel and Cleis Press and I just had to tell you about it. This is the perfect example of what makes for a great book trailer.

I've seen my share of book trailers and have been singularly unimpressed by them. I keep thinking it sounds like it should be a good idea. . . but put into action? It just never seems to turn out the way you want it to.

No, not mine. I don't have any book trailers--yet. You can deride them when I finally make them, but for now, we'll just have to deride others.

But back to Rachel's trailers: Rachel's trailers are very Rachel. They're sweet and sexy--and kind of innocent. They're also actually entertaining. They're the perfect trailers for erotica anthologies. Her first trailer was for her latest spanking anthology, Spanked: Red-Cheeked Erotica, and I loved it. I think she's out done herself with the new one.

Now, if only I could do something like this...

Just a Little Restraint, Please!

Alison Tyler has this amazing blog, Trollop With a Laptop. Perhaps you've seen it? Well, if you haven't, you really should check it out, but I warn you, it's extremely addictive.

I was just perusing it before heading off to bed (I have to get used to going to bed at more reasonable hours since I'm starting back to work in the middle of the week) when I got all tied up reading a few hand-picked dungeon excerpts from some of the best erotic authors going--people like Rachel Kramer Bussel and Michael Hemmingson. Anyway, I get to the end of the post and she invites people to post their own dungeon excerpts on their blogs and report back. Well, you know me: you can't swing a dead cat around my stories without hitting a dungeon scene or three.

Here's one from a story called "A Public Spectacle." It's one you've most likely never seen since the story is, as yet, unpublished. Actually, this particular story is one big dungeon scene, but I'm just posting a short excerpt. Hope it pushes all the right buttons.

“Ready?” Janice nodded her little nod. “Climb up on the horse, girl.”

My girl walked back into the light and, rather indelicately, climbed onto the black leather spanking horse in the center of the spot. She rested her feet and hands on blocks placed at the sides of the horse for her comfort. I followed her into the spot and clipped one ankle to a ring on the side of the horse and moved up toward her head. I clipped her wrist then made my way around the front of her and did the same to her other wrist and ankle.

I paused to admire her spread cheeks, with the white thong separating them, bottom slightly raised. I ran my hand over an ass cheek and gave it a little smack. No overt reaction. That’s all right. Working my way back up again, I took a handful of hair and lifted her head, enabling me to attach the snap hook to her collar, then to the ring at the head of the horse. “Make me proud,” I said—only for her ears.

My West Coast Book Tour Part I

Yikes! I've really been remiss about posting, but I think I mentioned that that might be a problem for me early on. What can I say? I'm a bad girl. I also promised I'd post about my West Coast tour for Where the Girls Are (actually, the tour was for my book, Where the Girls Are and Sacchi Green's books, Girl Crazy and Lesbian Cowboys.) so here's the first installment:

Beginning with the end, I just wanted to put this to you:

Seatac--Seattle-Tacoma Airport

I was on my way back to LA to hang out with Kathleen Bradean for one more day before returning home to New York. The above is a picture of the airport decor just before my Jet Blue gate. I'd been dragging myself, my laptop and my luggage around for a week. I sort of collapsed into a chair to wait for my flight but kept thinking about it and, though I was really tired, I just had to drag all my stuff back to take some pictures because I couldn't stop wondering why Seattle would want to decorate their airport with disembodied, bloodless stomachs?

'Cause really, that's what this is, right? I'm just sayin'...

There were other bizarre occurrences on the trip. Like, what's the deal with Segway tours? When I was in Toronto this line of people on Segways came gliding, single-file, down the sidewalk as we were parking the car. The very same thing happened in San Francisco, except they were on the buddy plan.

Actually, I think these things look like fun--geek fun, but definitely fun. And I'm a geek girl. One of these days someone'll take a picture of me gliding by on a Segway tour.

I Know, I know!

I keep saying I'm going to blog about the west coast tour--and I will, but I was out chatting with Rachel Kramer Bussel over coffee, then on to the Union Square farmer's market, where I bought a lot of heavy vegetables and got really hot (the sweaty kind of hot--no, no, not that sweaty kind of hot, the other sweaty kind of hot--the not fun sweaty kind of hot) and waited forever for a train while practically drowning in sweat, sweat and more sweat. Yes, it was disgusting (but I got some beautiful tomatoes). I finally made it home and am working on cooling off.

I'm meeting friends at our regular bar, Urge. We go early, then maybe remember to eat, then some of us go back for the go go boys and some of us are good, and go home to write... Yes, that's right, you know in which category you fit...

Short Story Contest!

The amazing Amie Evans asked me for help spreading the word about a new short fiction contest being sponsored by the Saints and Sinners Festival. I (finally) attended Saints and Sinners this past May and let me tell you, it was a revelation; it was life-changing. If I can possibly swing it next spring, I'll definitely be going again.

If you write, you owe it to yourself to attend Saints and Sinners. Let me say that again: If you WRITE, you owe it to yourself to attend Saints and Sinners. And it doesn't matter what you write. If you're serious about writing as an art, a craft, a business, or if you're a publisher, you will find it the most amazing professional conference around.

The quality of the Master Classes and Panels are more than worth the price of admission. Then there's the camaraderie of time spent with fellow professionals, not to mention the parties. I'm just sayin'... This festival is held in New Orleans: party, anyone? SAS knows what writers like...

First Annual Saints and Sinners GLBT Literary Festival Short Fiction Contest

The Saints and Sinners GLBT Literary Festival’s First Annual Short Fiction Contest is soliciting original, unpublished short stories between 5,000 and 7,000 words with GLBT content on the broad theme of “Saints and Sinners.” The contest is open to authors at all stages of their careers and to stories in all genres. The entry fee is $10 per story with a 3 story limit per author. One grand prize of $250 and two second place prizes of $50 will be awarded. In addition, the top stories will be published in an anthology from QueerMojo, an imprint of Rebel Satori Press. There will also be a book release party held during the 8^th annual Saints and Sinners Literary Festival in New Orleans May 13-16, 2010. The deadline for the receipt of manuscripts is January 2, 2010.

I Was Interviewed--Twice!

Well, actually, I've been interviewed three times recently, but I already talked about the first one by Ily Goyanes. But just today (OK, it's tomorrow now. Yes, I realize it can never be tomorrow but you know what I mean. Or maybe you don't.

All right, I'll start over. Two interviews with me went up online on Monday (that would be 8/24--in case somebody wants to know the actual date--you know--for legal reasons...). They're both pretty cool and somewhat similar. After all, I'm the same person in both of them. I'm just sayin'...

(Art is always nice to have and since I didn't have any pictures in my last entry, I thought I'd add this picture I took in San Francisco while I was on the book tour. I promise to write about that. It'll be next, I swear!)

Out of the Frying Pan and Into the Fire

Actually, the west coast book tour wasn't a "Frying Pan." It was quite a good time! I met a lot of people, did a lot of reading and ate a lot of Jack In The Box Tacos.

What the blog title refers to, actually, is the weather here in New York. I'd been keeping in touch with friends back here while I was on the road and they'd been telling me how hot it was (like, "It's three hundred and seventy nine thousand degrees.") and I knew it was hot and disgusting, but man, it's hot and disgusting! (This is where I'd insert a lot of *expletives deleted*)

I'm going to sit down and write some good entries about the tour, but right now I really just want to chill for a while. I did want to remind people about In the Flesh on Thursday, though.

Yes, I'll be reading here in New York tomorrow night, Thursday, August 20th at 8:00. I'm not completely sure what I'll be reading, but it might be something from my story in Broadly Bound since it got such a terrific review! So, here are the particulars:

Book Tour!

My first official book tour starts in two days. I have a lot to do, not the least of which is get a pedicure. I'm just sayin'...

But I'll be winging my way across the country, to the left coast (I, of course, live on the 'right' coast) on Wednesday. My good friend, Kathleen Bradean, will be picking me up at LAX and then, with a stop for Jack In The Box tacos, it's off to In the Flesh LA to read. Hopefully, after that, there'll be alcohol and more tacos* before hitting Kathleen's couch.

The tour is for my new book, Where the Girls Are, along with Sacchi Green's books, Girl Crazy (which I'm in) and Lesbian Cowboys. (I'll tell you what, Cleis books are known for their nice covers but Lesbian Cowboys has one fucking great cover!) So, if you're near any of the venues, please come out and say hi and get your books signed.

*I'm addicted to Jack In The Box tacos. Je les adore! But there are no Jack In The Boxes in New York, so when I go to California I make people take me to as many Jack In The Boxes as I can squeeze in. I collect Jack In The Box antenna toppers. Remember antenna toppers? I even have a scuba diving Jack. I decorate my Christmas tree with JITB antenna toppers.

So, I've been threatening to write a blog forever. And now I suppose it's finally gotten to the point where I can't hide from it anymore. My first anthology, Where the Girls Are: Urban Lesbian Erotica, was released July 1 and my second, The Sweetest Kiss: Ravishing Vampire Erotica, will be released October 1. I guess that means I have to get serious--or something. I told people (and they know who they are) my first blog post would be about the lesbian erotica reading in Toronto, When She Was Bad.

The reading was arranged by Evan Mora (who's in Where the Girls Are, by the way) to kick off Toronto Pride Week. The lineup of readers was awesome and I was thrilled and honored she asked me to join them. Big Mama's Boy restaurant hosted the reading in their upstairs dining room and the mood, food and booze were all just right. I was the first to read because, well, because I'm a ham. But I was followed by quite an amazing lineup of writers.
